now, this is ktvu channel 2 news at 6:00 p.m. >> good evening. i am ken pritchett. >> frank and julie are off tonight. we start with a deadly day on the slopes. a snowboarder was killed in an avalanche. kevin oliver has the story. >> reporter: ski patrol raced down the hill where paramedics tried to save the man. the man was buried for 5 hours. his friends left in shock, said the man just moved back to the area and this was his first outing the of season. >> we are missing a guy. missing a guy but they didn't start looking till 2-3 hours later. >> the man was buried in 2 feet of snow. friends said he was snow aboving when the snow broke -- snowboarding above it when the snow broke free. >> looking for him but they didn't find him. he was at the bottom. >> reporter: the ski patrol did a preliminary search. >> they did a courtesy search. concerned for safety reasons because of the unstable ice that is still up there. >> reporter: after more time passed and there was still no sign of the man search crews were called in. the resort was shut down. kevin oliver, ktvu channel 2 news. >

you this breaking news at 2:30 p.m. today as the fire raged inside the c&h enterprises building. >> paul chambers is live with the toxics that were inside the factory. paul? >> reporter: it has been three hours since the fire has been extinguishes. firefighters are out here making sure there are no hot spots. firefighters said they could see the fire from the middle of fremont from this company. >> reporter: coming down interstate 880 we could see the black smoke from 5 miles away. 1:45 p.m. this afternoon firefighters received a 911 call of a structure fire. crews called for back up, upgrading it to a three-alarm fire. this warns them of potential dangers. >> within the fammable categories, that is -- flammable categories, that is the worse. >> reporter: firefighters say the smoke was toxic because there was combustible oils and liquids inside. >> very toxic. you want to stay out of it. avoid it. anybody in the hot zone here, should have had a breathing apparatus on. >> employees inside c&h enterprises say the fire started in the rear of the building. they tried to put it out b

sandy hook elementary school. family and friends of two of the young victims came together today at separate memorial services. >> reporter: this is the funeral home where family and friends came together to say good-bye. many kids were wearing their colors in honor of the young football player. few people wanted to talk to the media. he said jack was buried in the jersey of his favorite new york giants favorite player, victor cruz. the students from sandy hook elementary school will not be going back to campus. for much of the day moving trucks were bringing in furniture from sandy hook elementary school. >> we are opening our arms and our community to bring them over, nothing is ever going to be the same. but we are trying to pick up the pieces. >> reporter: none of the schools were open for classes today. at newtown high school staff and administrators gathered for all day meetings to figure out how to handle school tomorrow. in bethel, the high school and other schools were back in session tonight. some students were wearing elementary school. sandy hook love and support multipl

but everyone is staying pretty calm. at this point it's been going on for a little while. they say they haven't had anything really new to report except for just waiting to see what happens. one thing that one of the faculty members pointed out to me was that just a couple of months ago they had an active shooter training session involving local police and law enforcement and the campus police. in terms of faculty and people knowing what to do in case of this kind of an emergency. so they say actually they're pretty prepared. they didn't know they'd have to do it in real life. they had training exercises for this kind of potential incident. so people pretty much know what to do. right now all they're doing is waiting to see if they can get more information. >> and robert, you arrived on the scene after this lockdown went into effect around 4:30. how close are you actually to campus? how far away are they keeping you back at this point? >> reporter: actually we've been sort of on the move because i've been talking on the phone with these faculty members and with san jose police. so

when she was shot. we talked to her in the hospital. she was among 100 people who were at that christmas eve service when several butts came through the -- bullets came through the walls. her first instinct was to protect her children. [ speaking foreign language ] >> reporter: in spanish she said when i saw the bullet i threw myself over them so it might hit me and not them. she showed us where she was shot. doctors told her the doctors narrowly missed her heart. after three surgeries she is doing well and thanks god she is alive. police say a 17-year-old was also shot outside the church. he is expected to make a full recovery. police are still looking for the shooters and the church does not appear to be the target. she still has another 3-4 days at the hospital before she can go home. tonight in 90 minutes the church will have its first service since the shooting. we will be there and we will have much more from our interview with this very brave mom. live in oakland, eric rasmussen, ktvu channel 2 news. >>> we know the identity of the man shot and killed bypolice this morni

last 30 minutes we have learned two people were killed and a third person was injured in a shooting at a busy shopping mall in clackamas. the suspected gunman is also dead though they are not saying how he died. you're looking right now at live pictures from the scene. you can see it's an aerial picture here. a lot of light coming from the shopping center. this is all coming southeast of portland. now witnesses say the shooter was wearing a camouflage and a mask. a white hockey mask to be specific when he entered through a macy's store then went into a food court and started firing. he reportedly was using a rifle when he opened fire inside that crowded mall. so just a headline right now. two people dead. a third person injured and the shooter is also dead making that three dead here at this shooting outside of portland oregon. >>> hayward police arrested two men today suspected of robbing a jewelry store. police say after threatening the store worker he stole more than $140,000 in jewelry then took off with another man who was waiting in a car. but police caught up with both of them a

. we're at the nyack gas station just off interstate 80. interstate 80 at least it to this point is -- least to this point is relatively degree clooer but is relatively clear now. a semi truck had to back down just for a slope that small, about a foot. we made the drive up here. it took us a couple of hours just to get here. it was a long, slow drive. it was not that people had to chain up or simply because the chain control was in effect. the long at times, 10 mile long back-up on interstate 80 east and west had more to do with the holiday. >> things are going very good with the weather and all the plow trucks and all of our graders, blowers, everything's going, our big problem right now is actually the traffic because we have both east and west traffic at very enormous numbers right now. >> reporter: it took us about two hours travel to go 30 miles of the nyack gas station was as far as we had time to go and it was as far as some people should have gone of the parking lot was packed as people took a break from the long drive to gas up. weekend. here's a live look at storm tracker 2, where you can see a new system is just beginning to make its way through region. we have live team storm watch coverage. bill martin is tracking the conditions for us from our weather center. we begin with ken live in the north bay where many nabbeds are still recovering from the last storm. >> reporter: the rain, a light rain started coming down in petaluma just about 20 minutes ago. we're standing in front of the petaluma river, one of many rivers in the north bay that were edging toward flood stage with this series of storms over the weekend, the heaviest on sunday. since then we've had one dry day. the river levels are going down. that's unlikely to change with this rain. this is miller creek in marin wood, scene of a search and rescue by firefighters yesterday when teenagers reportedly playing here were fear swept away. no one of found. today the creek has slowed, much of the danger passed. some rivers are still raging. this is the russian river near forestville. >> so there is kind of a beach in the middle of us here. was a beach
